The Salah of Jumah

Literary meaning: Jumah is an Arabic word which means “Gathering”.

Religious Meaning: In religious prospective Jamah is a special day in which a specific adoration is assigned to Muslims to do that is Jumah Salah. Scholars differed upon when Jumah wan made obligatory first but majority of them said that first it was made obligatory in Madina before migration (Hijrat).

Jumah is an Islamic name earlier before Islam it was call Arobah.

Ibn Sireen states that:

  • Folks of Madinah gathered before Prophet ﷺ migrate to Madinah and before Jumah was revealed and they name that day Jumah.
  • Folks of Madinah said that Jews gather on a special day every week and same do Nasara, Let’s have a day to get together in which we will remember Allah, ask blessings for prophet and thank to our almighty Allah so they named it Jumah and gather near Asad Bin Zurarah and he led them with two Raska’h Salam which was first Jumah salah (which was not revealed and not made obligatory yet) and after this incident Jumah was made revealed.[1]

After Jumah was made obligatory first it was led by Mosab Bin Umair in Madinah.

All four Madahib (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafai and Hanbali) are agreed upon this point that Jumah is Obligatory and it is proven from Holy Qur’an, Hadith and consensus (Ijmaa).

Importance of the Salah of Jumah

Jumah has a great importance in a Muslim’s life and it’s a weekly gathering program and it has social and political value too if it is applied. A person can learn many things from Jumah sermon and people will learn the Islamic value and culture. It’s also a special day for adoration.

In the Holy Qur’an:

“O, you who believe! When the call for Jumah is made, hasten towards the remembrance of Allah and leave off all trading.” [2]

In Hadith:

It was narrated from Abu Al-Ja’d Ad-Damri-who was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ – which the Prophet ﷺ said,

“Whoever missed three jumu’ahs out of negligence, Allah (SWT) will place a seal over his heart.”[3]

These all threats mentions her indicates that if one deliberately miss Friday prayer, will be out of Islam.

Friday prayer has a great importance in a Muslim’s life.

  1. This day is called Sayyad Al-Ayyam (head of all other days)
  2. This is the best day in which the sun rises on the earth.
  3. Many historical events occurred on this day like Adam (May Allah be pleased with him) was born, revealed from Jannah to earth, his repent was accepted and he died all these happened on the Friday.
  4. The day of resurrection will be on Friday.
  5. There is a time on Friday when a Muslim offer salah and pray for himself Allah will surely accept his Dowa.

In Hadith:

Narrated Abu Hurairah:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was expelled (from Paradise), on it his contrition was accepted, on it he died, and on it the Last Hour will take place. On Friday every beast is on the lookout from dawn to sunrise in fear of the Last Hour, but not jinn and men, and it contains a time at which no Muslim prays and asks anything from Allah but He will give it to him.[4]

Things to do on Friday

Friday prayer has a great importance in Islamic teachings as it is discussed before and the Day of resurrection will be on Friday.

In Hadith:

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard saying that Prophet ﷺ said,

“The best day in which the sun rises, is Friday. Adam was born and entered the paradise and was expelled from it on this day and the Day of resurrection will occur on Friday.[5]

There are some Sunnah to follow on Friday:

  1. To take bath.
  2. To brush teeth.
  3. To apply perfume before coming for Jumah prayers.
  4. To put on his best cloths.
  5. To use wooden stick (Miswak)[6]
  6. Make yourself know at work or at school that you have to do these important tasks to attend on Friday. It also helps to differentiate between five scheduled prayers a day and special prayer in a week on Friday.
  7. Being on time for Jumah salah is important and companions of the prophet used to pay great deal of attention in getting to Jumah on time.

Prophet ﷺ said, “When it is Friday, the angels stand at every door of the mosque and record the people in the order of their arrival, and when the Imam sits (on the pulpit for delivering the sermon) they fold up their sheets (manuscripts) and listen to the mention (of Allah).[7]

When does the Jumah time start?

All the five prayers are ordered to perform on their appointed time and it’s discussed earlier. Friday prayer’s time is the same as Duhar prayer’s time and it stars when the sun passed its zenith.

In Hadith:

Narrated by Anas Ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) that:

“The Prophet ﷺ used to offer Friday prayer when the sun had crossed the meridian.” [8]

Details of time are as follow:

  1. Friday prayer’s time starts when the sun crosses its zenith.
  2. Friday prayer offered prior to its time would not be correct.
  3. Friday prayer offered after its time is over, would be invalid.[9]
