Necessary acts for validity of the Salah

There are 27 necessary things for validity of Salah. They include prerequisites, Faraiz and Wajib etc. They are also mentioned separately in next unit.

  • Physical purity.
  • Ritual purity.
  • Purity of cloth.
  • Purity of place (at least the areas where to put both legs, both hands, both knees and forehead must be pure).
  • Covering of the Satar (parts of the bodies which are necessary to cover for a person).
  • To stand facing towards Qibla.
  • To be the time of the Salah.
  • To believe that the time of Salah has started.
  • To make intention.
  • To say Allaho Akbar (Takbeer-e-Tahrima).
  • Recitation of Holy Quran.
  • Recitation of at least one big Aayah or three small Ayat in the Salah of two Rak’ah of Farz Salah and in all Rika of Nafil, Sunnah and witr Salah
  • Not to fix any part of Quran to recite in Salah for its validity (it means not to fix any particular surah to recite).
  • Followers must not to recite in Salah but they must keep quiet if they recite it is Makruh-e-Tahrimi (which is near to Haram).
  • To do Ruku (to bow down at knee).
  • To do prostration (to put forehead at the ground) even though at his hands or at the corner of the cloth.
  • To do prostration with putting nose and forehead together at the ground. It is not allowed to do it with one of them as only with nose or only with forehead. If there is any problem with head or nose, a person can do prostration with any one of them.
  • Place of prostration must not be higher than that of legs more than half cubit. If it is so, the prostration (Sujood) will not be allowed except in huge crowd. In such gathering, a person can do prostration (Sujood) on the back of other person who is offering his Salah.
  • To put both hands and both knees and some of the toes on the ground while doing prostration.
  • To come back from prostration posture to nearest sitting posture at least (but it is better to come to complete sitting posture).
  • To do second prostration.
  • To sit in the last sitting until when a person can read Tashahhud at least.
  • To separate the last sitting from all others Arkan (parts of Salah).
  • Offer Salah in awaking position (not in sleeping or dozing position).
  • To know the features of Salah and its obligatory actions so that he can differentiate between the obligatory and Sunnah actions of Salah.[1]
  • Takbeer-e-Tahrima must be pronounced immediately after making intention.
  • It must be pronounced in standing posture before Ruku (bowing down to knee).
  • It must be pronounced at least in such a voice that he himself can hear it.
  • To make intentions of leading Salah for followers.
  • To define the Farz Salah that he leading or offering (it means to name the Farz Salah in intention like Zohar Farz Salah or Asar Farz Salah etc.)
  • To define the Wajib Salah (but there is no condition to define Nafil Salah).
  • To stand straight which is called Qiyam except Nafil Salah (One can offer Nafil in sitting posture without any problem).[2]


There are four prerequisite for the validity of the Salah.

  1. Purity from minor impurity, major impurity, Haiz and Nifas. There are many kinds of purity for the validity of the Salah. Some details are given below.
  2. Covering the Sataar: At least the obligatory parts of the body.
  3. Make intention: Intention is necessary for the validity of the Salah.
  4. To face the Qibla: This is face to the direction of the Kaba.[3]
  5. Some books mentioned “The time of the Salah” and “the belive that the time started” as prerequisite. Other books did not mention it here but in conditions of the Salah being on the Muslims.

These are four prerequisites for the validity of the Salah. Some details are given bellow separately. In some books they are counted as seven. They explained the Taharah in details. They are: 1. Purity of Body. 2. Purity of clothes. 3. Purity of place of the Salah. 4. To cover the Satar (defined parts of body). 5. To make intention. 6. To face toward the Qibla. 7. The time of the Salah and to know/to believe that the time of the Salah.

Salah becomes obligatory (Farz) on an adult Muslim but there are few conditions for its validity. These conditions include prerequisites, Fraiz, Wajib, Sunnah etcs.
