Intention (Niyah) of the Salah

Literary: Niyah means intention of doing something whether you intend to do something right or wrong.

In Shariat: Niyah means to intend to do something for the sake of happiness of Allah Almighty and if you do anything with such intention you will be rewarded.

Intention is very important in Islamic teachings because your vice and virtue depends upon your intentions. As if you do anything right with wrong intention, you will not be rewarded in the sight of Allah Almighty though you may be great in the sight of people.

As in the Hadith:

Meaning:

It has been narrated on the authority of Umar Bin Al-Khattab that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

“(The value of) an action depends on the intention behind it. A man will be rewarded only for what he intended. The emigration of one who emigrates for the sake of Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) ; and the emigration of one who emigrates for gaining a worldly advantage or for marrying a woman is for what he has emigrated.”[1]

Rules of Niyyah:

  • Making intention is related to heart, so it is enough for a person to do intention of Salah in his heart without verbal pronunciation but to say it verbally is far better.
  • If he makes intention verbally he can name the Salah and Rak’ah also and whether it is Ada Salah (offering at time) or Qaza Salah (offering after time is passed).
  • If Imam is going to lead Salah he should make the intention of leading Salah also.[2]

How to make Niyah:

Doing Niyah is an important part of any act because our vice and virtue depends upon our intentions so we should do intentions before starting Salah.

Place of Niyah: its place is heart it means if a person just do intention of worship in the heart and offered Salah that would be alright, but doing intention orally is far more batter after in heart.

Time of Niyah: its time is a little before starting the worship (Ibadat) and it is the best to do Niyah followed by Takbeer-e-Tahrima in Salah and it is Sunnah to do Niyet orally.

How to make intention?

Imam will do intention like this:

“I do intention for leading Salah of Fajr two Rak’ah for those who are present now and who are absent and going to be present. My face is towards Qibla Allaho Akbar (By saying Takbeer he will put his hands on the belly button)”.

Followers will do intention like this:

“I do intention of Fajr Salah two Rak’ah behind this Imam and my face is towards Qibla Allaho Akbar”

Munfarid (offering alone) will do intention like this:

” I do intention of Fajr Salah two Rak’ah and my face is towards Qibla Allaho Akbar”.[3]
